I was out cycling when I noticed this grass snake so I stopped to take a photo. It appeared dead but then it's tongue flicked out and when somebody tried to move it to the edge of the path it took off at speed. I've read up on this species and as this snake was small and out in March I assume it is male. They play dead to avoid predators and can secrete blood or "autohaemorrhage" from the mouth and nose so maybe it was not injured? Anyway I've only seen these two maybe three times in my life so a great sighting!
